Abstract: This data set contains the land use classification of 2009 for the study area of the CRC/Transregio 32: "Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: monitoring, modelling and data assimilation", which is the catchment of the river Rur. The study area is mainly situated in the western part of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and parts of the Netherlands and Belgium, covering an area of approximately 2365 square kilometres. The land use classification is derived from a supervised, multi temporal remote sensing data analysis using "Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer" (ASTER) and RapidEye data. ASTER is a multispectral satellite sensor, which has three bands in the visible and near infrared (VNIR) with 15 m spatial resolution, six bands in the shortwave infrared (SWIR) with 30 m, and five bands in the thermal infrared (TIR) with 90 m. For the land use classification the VNIR data acquired on July 27, 2009 were used. Each sensor of the RapidEye earth observation satellite system has five multispectral bands in the visible to near infrared wavelength region with a spatial resolution of 6.5 m. The incorporated data set was acquired on May 24, 2009. To enhance the information content of the land use data the Multi-Data Approach was used to combine the remote sensing data with additional data sets like the "Authorative Topographic-Cartographic Information System" (ATKIS Basic-DLM). The classification is provided in GeoTIFF and in ASCII format. Spatial resolution: 15 m; projection: WGS84, UTM Zone 32N.

Abstract: A data base of rainfall simulations was compiled comprising the experimental work of Martin (1988), Haider (1994), Gerlinger (1997), Schröder and Auerswald (2000) and Michael (2001). The data base covers 726 rainfall simulations (24384 runoff measurements) which were carried out on 209 arable plots in Germany under a wide range of different conditions. The data base is freely available and may be used as an extensive source to examine specific questions. Fiener et al. (submitted) provide detailed information on the origin of the individual data sets, their compilation, the range of the data base and on the quality of the included data. The added supplement provides meta data on the structure of the relational data base, on its identifiers SEQ, RUN and SOIL, on the coding of missing and flagged data as well as a brief introduction of the available files and variables.

Abstract: This data set contains the enhanced land use classification of 2010 for the study area of the CRC/Transregio 32: "Patterns in Soil-Vegetation-Atmosphere Systems: monitoring, modelling and data assimilation", which corresponds to the catchment of the river Rur. The study area is mainly situated in the western part of North Rhine-Westphalia (Germany) and parts of the Netherlands and Belgium. The land use classification is derived from supervised, multi temporal remote sensing data analysis using RapidEye and Landsat 5 TM. For the land use analysis datasets of the following acquisition dates were used from RapidEye: May 23, May 20, July 07, July 08 and July 10. From Landsat 5 a dataset of August 14 was incorporated. Full coverage of the study area was not available for all acquisition dates. To enhance the information content of the land use data product, the Multi-Data Approach (MDA) was used to combine the remote sensing derived land use information with additional data sets like the 'Authorative Topographic-Cartographic Information System' (ATKIS Basic-DLM, AAA schema) and 'Physical Block' information. The classification is provided in GeoTIFF and in ASCII format. Spatial resolution: 15 m; projection: WGS84, UTM Zone 32N.

Abstract: LAI was modelled for arable land in the northern part of the Rur catchment (fertile loess plain) for the year 2009. Modelled crops are Winter Wheat, Sugar Beet, Maize, and Winter Barley. Data was modelled using the dynamically coupled process-oriented ecohydrological models from the DANUBIA simulation system using the configuration described by Korres at al. (2013, doi:10.1016/j.jhydrol.2013.05.050). This paper does also provide model validation data for LAI.
